ESSA Thyroid Registry

The ESSA Thyroid Registry is a national, prospectively maintained surgical registry established by the Endocrine Surgeons of South Africa (ESSA). Its purpose is to collect standardized data on patients undergoing thyroid surgery across public and private healthcare facilities in South Africa.

The registry aims to improve understanding of thyroid disease patterns, surgical outcomes, and complications within the local context, address gaps not covered by the National Cancer Registry, and support quality improvement, resource allocation, and locally relevant research.

Data are securely captured using REDCap, with strict ethical oversight, patient consent, and data de-identification. Ultimately, the registry seeks to enhance patient care, inform the development of South African–specific clinical guidelines, and promote collaborative endocrine surgery research nationwide.
